iPic Westwood in Los Angeles was more than just a movie theater—it was designed as a luxury entertainment experience. Opened in 2014, the theater transformed the former Avco Center Cinemas, a historic Westwood theater that opened in 1972 and was known for showing major films such as the original Star Wars on 70mm. iPic Westwood featured six small auditoriums with reclining leather seats, pillows, blankets, reserved seating, and seat-side service that allowed guests to order food and drinks with the push of a button. One especially fascinating connection is that filmmaker J.J. Abrams remembered watching Star Wars at the old Avco theater as a child and reportedly used “AVCO” as the working title for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
