Ballet took root in Los Angeles during the early 20th century when the city's growing cultural ambitions attracted touring European companies and pioneering dance artists seeking new audiences in the American West. The art form flourished in the 1960s and 1970s with the establishment of the Los Angeles Ballet (originally Ballet of Los Angeles, founded in 2006) and the construction of the Music Center's Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in 1964, which provided a world-class venue for international companies. The opening of Segerstrom Center for the Arts in 1986 further elevated Southern California's ballet prominence, becoming the West Coast home for American Ballet Theatre. Today, Los Angeles boasts a thriving ballet ecosystem that includes resident companies, prestigious visiting productions, and innovative contemporary ballet ensembles that reflect the city's creative spirit and multicultural heritage.
