Hermosa Beach, located in Los Angeles County, is a popular destination for beach-goers, with over two miles of shoreline and an average of 100,000 visitors on summer weekends. The city is particularly famous for its beach volleyball scene, both professional and amateur. Hermosa Beach is the host of the AVP Hermosa Beach Open tournament and several amateur CBVA tournaments throughout the year.
The beach offers 71 approved beach volleyball courts and six beach tennis courts, ranging from 1st to 35th Street. The courts located near the Pier are maintained by the city and are available for use during special events. Within the Commercial Zone (10th to 15th Street), the city operates and maintains the courts, which are open for use through the Contract Class Program, Outdoor Fitness Permit Program, and Special Events Permit Program. The volleyball courts are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, but can also be reserved through the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors. You can find both men's and women's courts along the beach, and portable nets are also allowed as long as they don't interfere with beach traffic, lifeguards, or other volleyball courts.
Hermosa Beach has also been a popular location for filming, appearing in movies such as Hardbodies (1984), Men at Work (1990), Side Out (1990), La La Land (2016), Jackie Brown (1997), and Point Break (1991). The beach and its surroundings were also featured in scenes of the TV show The O.C. and the "Beach House" in the Beverly Hills, 90210 TV show was located on the north end of the Strand (1994/1995 seasons).
Volleyball courts can be found on the following LA County Beaches: Dockweiler Beach, Santa Monica Beach, Malibu Surfrider Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance Beach, Venice Beach, Will Rogers Beach and Zuma Beach.
