Opened in September 2020, SoFi Stadium boasts a distinctive fixed-roof design and stands as the premier sports and entertainment venue in Inglewood, California. Home to both the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers of the NFL, it also hosts the annual LA Bowl in college football. SoFi Stadium is noteworthy as one of only two NFL stadiums shared by two teams, alongside MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. This modern complex marks a significant milestone as the first outside the New York area to concurrently host two NFL franchises, following a lineage that includes notable venues like Shea Stadium, Giants Stadium, and MetLife Stadium since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.
Founded in Los Angeles in 1959, the Los Angeles Chargers began their journey in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). After one season in LA, they moved to San Diego in 1961, where they thrived for 56 seasons. The Chargers became part of the NFL in 1970 following the AFL-NFL merger. In 2017, the team returned to Los Angeles, coinciding with the Rams' relocation back to the city from St. Louis. During their first stint in LA, the Chargers played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. In San Diego, they called Balboa Stadium and San Diego Stadium (later known as Jack Murphy Stadium and Qualcomm Stadium) home. From 2017 to 2019, the Chargers temporarily played at Dignity Health Sports Park (formerly StubHub Center) while SoFi Stadium was under construction, marking a storied journey across multiple iconic venues in California.
The Los Angeles Chargers have a storied history marked by significant achievements in both the AFL and NFL. After winning the AFL championship in 1963, they emerged as a formidable force in the league, reaching the AFL playoffs five times and appearing in the AFL Championship game four times before the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. Since joining the NFL, the Chargers have continued their success, making 15 playoff appearances and competing in four AFC Championship games. Their most notable season came in 1994 when they won their first and only AFC championship, earning a trip to Super Bowl XXIX against the San Francisco 49ers, although they fell short in a hard-fought contest. The Chargers' legacy is further highlighted by the induction of eight players and one coach into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including iconic figures like Lance Alworth, Dan Fouts, Kellen Winslow, and LaDainian Tomlinson, showcasing their impact and contributions to the sport.
