Considered the L.A. Winter swell magnet spot and one of the most consistent waves in Los Angeles’ South Bay, El Porto, tucked away in the northern portion of Manhattan Beach, is a great spot to surf, especially in the fall and winter when bigger and more consistent swells roll in from the northwest. Thanks to an underwater cave, El Porto offers some pretty sizable waves well into the winter that more seasoned surfers will appreciate. Lower Summer swells get blocked by Palos Verdes Peninsula and the southern Channel Islands. Expect both left and right waves which break over sandbars and are usually favored by short boarders.
El Porto Beach is no secret among the locals, so make sure to arrive early to snag a parking spot and catch some unobstructed swells. The best place to park is in the metered parking lot on 45th Street just west of Highland Avenue.
