Mishe Mokwa Trail to Sandstone Peak

Mishe Mokwa Trail to Sandstone Peak

The Mishe Mokwa Trail is located in the Santa Monica Mountains near the border of Los Angeles and Ventura County, and with views of the valley, the Pacific Ocean, and the mountains to the east, not to mention Balancing Rock and Split Rock. This is a "must-see" trail to summit the highest peak in Santa Monica Mountains sitting at 3,111 ft. As you travel further along the trail it will take you further into the canyon to Split Rock, which is home to a picnic area, creek, and spring. Leaving Split rock you'll rise out of the canyon and at the highest point, you'll see a pyramid-shaped rock called Egyptian Rock straight ahead. Inspiration Point, elevation 2800 feet, is another beautiful place to take in the views.

The Sandstone Peak trailhead parking is about one mile past Circle X Ranch on Yerba Buena Road. The landmark on Pacific Coast Highway is the famous seafood roadhouse, Neptune’s Net. Head to Circle X Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains, and start up the Backbone Trail toward Sandstone Peak. After a third of a mile, turn right, taking the connection to Mishe Mokwa Trail. The wide rock and dirt track pass a ravine with bold sandstone cliffs.
